Little Cottonwood Canyon
Scenic Byway
The Little Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway is found just a few miles south of
Big Cottonwood Canyon
. It takes you up SR-210 to Alta and Snowbird winter and summer resorts. World-famous … and world-class … ski resorts in the Wasatch Mountains east of
Salt Lake City
. But why is it named Little Cottonwood? Because its length and width are less than its neighbor just to the north. Marvel at the towering glacier-carved granite walls framing the entrance to this canyon. In fact, some of the area’s most majestic buildings … like the Salt Lake City LDS Temple and the State Capitol … were constructed from massive blocks of granite carved out of the lower part of this canyon. Near the entrance to the canyon ... at certain times of the year, you can view
Rocky Mountain goats
high up on the granite walls. At Snowbird, take some time to ride Utah’s only aerial tram. At the top, you’ll experience an unbelievable bird’s-eye view of the Wasatch Mountains. Just a mile up the canyon is Alta. And above that,
Albion Basin
. Home of Utah’s most spectacular wildflower display during the early summer. At this altitude, this display doesn't actually reach full bloom until mid to late July. And this year ... in 2011 ... even later. Little Cottonwood is 7 miles long. But it's a winding road. And can be treacherous in the winter. To get there, take I-215 to the 6200 South/Canyons exit. The first canyon is Big Cottonwood. Just a couple miles to the south, you’ll find its partner.
